That’s worth it DuckDuckGo they’ve got their web browser ready for PC, but they’re making progress despite the slowness, and as we near the end of a year of its existence, macOS users can now freely install its beta version.
In short, the privacy company DuckDuckGo, best known for its search service, the most popular of the alternatives to the big ones, with its pluses and minuses, has been working for some time to develop solutions that go beyond this, most notably anti-tracking add-ons for web browsers , which ultimately integrate said protections and use your browser to do so.
Well, after the search engine came add-ons and after browser add-ons, like many others on the market, developers based on Chromium, an open source project sponsored by Google and used by other companies such as Brave, Opera or Microsoft to create their respective applications. However, DuckDuckGo started its journey in reverse and released its own browser based on Chromium, first for iOS and Android.
The move seemed to work well for them, prompting chants of the next step: making the leap from mobile to desktop, and they chose macOS as their deployment platform. It took about six months from the original announcement to the first beta for Mac, which is more or less what happened until we were concerned, DuckDuckGo for Mac open beta. In other words, anyone who wants to can install it.
DuckDuckGo for Mac
In addition to the features that DuckDuckGo for Mac already offered, this development period served to add others such as Duck player, a type of YouTube video player that blocks ads in videos that use profile data, i.e. Google’s tracking technology. In other words, it doesn’t block advertising, but rather one based on tracking user habits, or at least that’s how the feature is explained. We’ll see what Google thinks about it.
Other new features of DuckDuckGo for Mac, according to TechCrunch, are improvements to block trackers – and which are at the fingertips of every user regardless of the browser they use through official DuckDuckGo extensions – as well as managing horrible usage alerts. cookies that were forcibly implemented by websites as a result of GDPR and to the displeasure of the user.
And more: DuckDuckGo for PC recently added other features common among web browsers, such as the ability to pin tabs; also added a new bookmark bar; and more specific functions such as Bitwarden open source password manager integration for the corresponding tasks. The plan is also to continue adding features to the browser before it launches on other platforms, which at first appears to be taking longer than expected.
In the meantime, if you’re running macOS 10.15 or higher and fancy trying out DuckDuckGo, you can install it from this link. It’s “coming soon” for Windows, the official site says, even though it’s been doing so for months; and is not and is not expected to be for Linux. We will see in the future.
