Doctor Who jumps to Disney+ but stays from BBC

One of the most awaited releases by his fans is the release future new season of Doctor Who. Recall that the last episode of the thirteenth season was broadcast in December 2021, although it is true that three specials were released this year, The Eve of the Daleks, The Legend of the Sea Devils and much more recently (last weekend), The Power of the Doctor. So the wait for the fourteenth season, when Ncuti Gatwa plays the new doctor, has been long overdue.

A veteran of the BBC series, the first episode of which was broadcast on November 23, 1963so approaching its 60th birthday, six decades, yes, with a big break between 1989 and 2005 (with a film in between, yes, Doctor Who: The Movie, released in May 1996). This of course explains to us that this new season will premiere next year, although we hope they don’t decide to have it premiere to coincide with the premiere of the first episode of the first season, which is his 60th birthday, because that would mean that there is more than a year to wait.

However, and whenever that happens (though hopefully soon), what will he do it’s official it is? its premiere will take place next yearand that apart from the UK where it will be broadcast by the BBC, the rest of the world will be able to see it via Disney+, which was produced with global emissions rights, with the clear exception of the UK. Something that of course makes us wonder what will happen to the previous seasons.

And today, if we want to see Doctor Who in Spain, we can find 10 seasons on Amazon Prime Video and five on Pluto TV, which are broadcast on his channel dedicated exclusively to the series. Now with the announcement of future premieres on Disney +, we are left with the question of whether they will also be transferred to the Disney service or, conversely, Amazon and/or Pluto will keep the seasons they currently have in the catalog. Something that will almost certainly depend on the contracts signed by both platforms with the BBC.

An important explanation, yes it is the series remains under the control of the BBC, who will continue to produce new episodes and have full creative control. Disney + will be limited (which is not little) to its online distribution worldwide.
