Microsoft has finally started rolling out the Android 12L update to its dual-screen smartphones. According to the company, the latest version “makes your daily work easier by creating stronger connections between your Windows 11 PC and your Duo device.”
In addition to the Android version of the Surface Duo and Duo 2, this month’s update brings a major visual update with familiar visuals and consistency. Microsoft says Surface Duo devices now use an “aligned visual language” for key system components such as unified iconography, colors, and UI controls across Windows and Android.
The update also introduces a new dynamic theme engine for customization, with color palettes applied across the entire OS depending on the wallpaper you choose or a host of new out-of-the-box options.
Android 12L for Surface Duo and Duo 2 also features a new Pen menu that can be invoked by pressing the shortcut button on the Surface Slim Pen 2 (shown below). The menu provides quick access to your favorite handwriting apps, as well as the ability to take screenshots and annotate.
Other Android 12L enhancements for Microsoft’s dual-screen smartphones include updated widgets, a wider design and contrast optimization, better accessibility, and a new privacy panel that monitors camera, microphone, and location usage.
