If your devices are still running Windows 7 or 8.1, listen up: According to Google’s latest announcement, the company will officially end support for Chrome for the two operating systems mentioned above, with the Chrome 110 pre-release from February 7, 2023.

While Google Chrome will continue to work after the update, devices running these operating systems will no longer receive any feature updates or security patches. This increases the risk for users and companies to fall victim to online attacks if they continue to use Windows 7 or 8.1.

“To continue receiving future versions of Chrome, you need to make sure your device is running Windows 10 or later,” Google says on its Chrome Help blog. “This coincides with Microsoft ending support for the Windows 7 ESU and expanded support for Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023.”

According to StatCounter, Windows 7, whose support ended in January 2020, still occupies 10.68% of the worldwide desktop market. This means that many people around the world still use this operating system. Windows 8.1, on the other hand, has a miserable 2.7% market share. With Chrome being one of the most popular web browsers on Windows and more apps dropping support for the two operating systems, it’s best for users to finally upgrade to Windows 10 and 11.
