Global computer shipments fell 15.5% year-on-year in the third quarter of this year, according to Counterpoint Research. The 3rd quarter of 2022 is the period from July to September. In the third quarter of this year, PC OEMs shipped 71.1 million units. Counterpoint says this is a massive year-over-year decline, after strong annual and sequential declines of 11.1 percent in the second quarter of 2022.

The decline in the third quarter of 2022 is mainly due to weak demand in both consumer and commercial markets due to global inflation. Despite the problem of parts shortages being resolved, OEMs and OEMs are forecasting negatively for the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first half of 2023. Speaking to supply chain participants, Counterpoint said that the highest inventory figures are in the third quarter of 2022. Complete equipment manufacturers believe that the inventory reduction process will continue until 2023.

As for OEMs, Apple saw a 7 percent year-over-year increase in shipments. This is because the Cupertino giant announced a new product at the end of the second quarter and supplies are replenished after the quarantine in China. ASUS saw shipments fall 9% year-over-year, while Lenovo saw it drop 16%. The market share of both companies was 5.5 percent and 16.9 percent, respectively, in the third quarter of 2022. HP sold 12.7 million units in the third quarter, with an 18 percent share. It fell 26.5 percent compared to the previous year. Dell recorded a 17 percent share and a 20 percent drop in shipments.

Chipmaker AMD has hinted that PC market weakness is already hurting its earnings and outlook, while Taiwanese brands Acer and Asus have said the PC industry won’t recover until the second half of 2023.

Counterpoint says:Among all PC segments, we believe ARM-based PCs and gaming PCs will best survive the market downturn thanks to Apple’s M-series offerings, as well as the additional efforts of chipmakers and the broader R&D ecosystem.
