A promising high-energy laser weapon test against drones and attack missiles was conducted on a frigate of the German navy.
As reported by Ukrinform with reference to Presseportal, this was reported by Germany’s Federal Agency for Equipment, Information Technology and the Use of the Armed Forces (Bundeswehr).
On the frigate “Saxony”, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Applications (BAAINBw), together with military-technical offices 71 and 91 and specialists of the German Navy, conducts tests of high use. Energy laser weapons against enemy drones and attack missiles” is read.
During the test, a live shot was fired in front of the Putlos military training ground for the first time at sea, and “test results show that the laser weapon has the potential to significantly expand the capabilities of the Bundeswehr.”
After nearly a decade of intensive research on laser effectors, “the results of these efforts have been combined into a demonstrator that combines all functions, from reconnaissance and data processing to high-energy laser warfare, in a 20-foot container.”
The laser gun demonstrator was installed on the Sachsen frigate at the end of June 2022 for testing in real operating conditions in the marine environment. To this end, BAAINBw has developed a comprehensive test program that includes complex test scenarios on land, water and air, during which the laser gun demonstrator must prove its suitability during tests that will take about a year.
Testing in October 2022 provided “proof that dynamic targets can be successfully implemented in real-world conditions.”
“Thanks to its capabilities, the system of the future is particularly suitable for combating small and mobile targets such as drones or speedboats at close and short ranges. Protection against mortar shells and guided missiles is also possible,” BAAINBw said.
It was also stated that these tests “formed the basis for the possible development of an operational laser weapon system for the German Navy”.
Previously, the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and its American division developed the Iron Beam high-energy laser combat system, designed to intercept missiles and drones.
