In addition to releasing new Windows 11 preview builds to developer and beta channels, Microsoft has announced a much-needed improvement to its Phone Link program. It copies one of the best features of macOS to make enabling mobile hotspots in Windows 11 much easier and faster.
macOS and iPadOS allow you to turn on a mobile hotspot without removing your phone — your iPhone’s hotspot is on hold in the list of available Wi-Fi networks with a single tap. The same feature is finally available for Windows 11 with the Phone Link app. Open network popup and select your phone to start mobile hotspot function without entering password or searching for hotspot settings.
Unfortunately, like some of Phone Link’s best features, the Instant Hotspot feature in Windows 11 is only available to those with certain Samsung smartphones. Here’s what you need to do, according to Microsoft:
- Samsung smartphone with One UI 4.1.1 and above
- PC with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Windows 11 build 22621 or higher
- A cellular plan that supports access points
- Phone Link version 1.22082.111.0 or higher
- Link to Windows app on Samsung devices with version 1.22081.142 or later
Surprisingly, the Instant Hotspot feature isn’t even available on Microsoft’s Surface Duo smartphones with the latest and greatest Android 12L update, which includes all the Windows 11-like design elements.
