Windows updates are usually designed to solve problems in the operation of hardware and applications. But the opposite can also happen – the recent update of the current versions of the OS caused a number of complaints from users. As it turned out, a fresh patch in some cases leads to the incapacity of three commonly used browsers at once.

After the release of update KB5012599, numerous complaints began to appear on the network about a critical error with the code 0xc0000022 when trying to start Chrome, Edge or Firefox. The problem is relevant for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but not all users are found.

“After installation [апдейта] i got error 0xc0000022 when starting edge, firefox and chrome so they don’t work anymore. Luckily, Vivaldi and Brave work perfectly so I can still surf the internet. Removing KB5012599 solves this problem,” said one of the victims.

According to available information, the problem is related to a conflict between update files and antivirus programs. ESET has already confirmed that it is working on the release of amendments for branded products, but the release date has not yet been announced. Now users can fix the situation manually by activating the ESET LiveGrid function in the antivirus settings and turning off the safe browser.

Users of other antivirus software have reported that disabling browser add-ons can help in some cases. An alternative method is to uninstall the KB5012599 update package. Microsoft has not yet commented on the situation.
