Several months have passed since the beginning of August, the moment Samsung chose to present its Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4, the latest generation of its device design when it comes to foldable smartphones. The type of device that, according to a Korean technology company a few months ago, will become standard in three years, in 2025. An interesting approach, yes, but it mainly hits on the handicap we already talked about some time ago, the price.
Be that as it may, and as I have stated on more than one occasion, Samsung’s commitment to foldable smartphones strikes me as an audacity, which I evaluate very positively and that I hope with all my might that it will turn out well. And not so much for the company, but mainly because the bet to break a premium model that can be improved is something to be thankful for. And no, I have nothing against the current form factor of smartphones, but what models like the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 have to offer seems more than interesting to me, not only for the future, but even today I admit that I’m quite attracted to the idea of using the device of this type. But alas, and even though we’ve been talking about a hypothetical foldable iPhone for a few years now, it seems its time is never ending.
This is, as I said, a risky bet, but it seems to be paying off. And it is as we can read in Softpedia, Samsung claims to be selling more foldable smartphones than ever. «Sales of Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 showed strong growth compared to previous models, despite a challenging market environment» says the company in a statement, which also points out that the fourth quarter of the year could be even more positive in this regard thanks to the Christmas campaign (in which we must also include Black Friday and Cyber Monday).
This is particularly noteworthy given the current economic situation, that it could reduce sales overall, and that in other circumstances it would penalize less conventional designs like foldable smartphones. Perhaps we can interpret this as compounding being considered less and less rare, since more and more users could already verify their good performance and robustness (one of the biggest concerns of those who have not yet tried them).
It’s true that Samsung does not provide specific numbers in this case, which would allow us to assess in detail the size of this improvement in sales. However, we have to remember that we are already coming from previous growths and that they have been quite remarkable up until now, so we can count on the fact that the numbers must be quite good in this regard.
