Elon Musk wants Twitter to bring back Vine

To no one’s surprise, Elon Musk’s Twitter account has been hypervitaminized. We learned this morning that he wants to rethink the verified system, though it may be necessary to use it as a Twitter Blue user at some point, for which he also wants to increase the monthly fee to $20. It doesn’t seem like the best solution, although it’s true that the system tested so far has worked quite erratically.

And now we know, according to Business Insider another of Elon Musk’s plans for Twitter: restore Vine. And unlike what I just commented about the verified plan, this time I have no qualms about saying that I think it’s a great idea. Plus, it seems like such a great idea that I don’t see how it hasn’t been done before, which in turn is an evolution of the illogical thing that seemed to me at the time to be Twitter’s decision to shut down the service.

In case you don’t remember him or if you didn’t know him, Vine was a short video service (with a maximum of six seconds) bought and launched Twitter at the beginning of 2013. In a short time, he managed to overtake Instagram on Twitter, which is more than a significant milestone, and for several years he did not stop adding features (web version, private messages, etc.). However, the numbers (economic in this case) never green-lit, which is why Twitter decided to shut down Vine six years ago, in October 2016.

It is true that the economic losses were significant, 289 million dollars in the last quarter, and that the platform lost “power” against its main rivals, Instagram or Snapchat, but it is also true that the company, instead of reacting to the situation, is trying to revive, he chose to lock the door in a decision that has historically proven to be extremely wrong. And so it is that we only have to look at TikTok’s current success to appreciate the full market that Vine could have been.

Now, however, the challenge is much more complex.Well, we are talking about a more developed market, but also with a lot of very tough competition. From the aforementioned TikTok to the successful YouTube Shorts, the short video format is today the preferred option of many users, especially the youngest, and competing in this arena does not seem easy.

At the beginning of this year Jack Dorsey said shutting down Vine is the decision he regrets the most, That is right. And now, with Elon Musk at the helm of Twitter, it may be time to reverse that. As I say, it’s hard for me to break into said market, but the simple fact of trying and taking advantage of Twitter’s user base as well seems like an achievement on the part of a billionaire.
