As Ukrinform reports, Sky News reports on this.
Astronomers classify a space rock as a “planet killer” because of the damage it can do on impact due to its size.
The asteroid, designated 2022 AP7, is one of several recently discovered asteroids orbiting Earth and Venus.
The asteroid itself is reported to have crossed Earth’s own orbit, but for now, there’s no need to panic. Experts reassure us that a possible collision is unlikely to occur before a few thousand years.
“To date, only about 25 asteroids have been detected whose orbits are entirely within Earth’s orbit, due to the difficulty of observing near the Sun’s glare,” said Scott S. Sheppard of the Earth and Planetary Laboratory at Carnegie. Scientific Institution.
As Ukrinform reports, the American space agency NASA deliberately guided a spacecraft to an asteroid as part of a test to protect Earth from collisions with space objects.
