Unity has released Enemies, a tech demo that was introduced a few months ago and has generated a lot of interest due to its great graphics. We are not talking about just one next generation technology demo, because it is clearly above anything we have seen to date, but also achieves what is required photorealism in many aspects.

Among the most important improvements that Unity introduced in its graphics engine and that were masterfully used in Enemies, we can highlight 4D pipeline optimizationa new generation of skin fixation system that allows use high density mesh (thanks to them, it is possible to recreate the peach skin effect that people have in certain parts of the body), corrosive effects on the irisNew shader for skin and technology that can realistically reproduce blood flow tension and create wrinkle maps.

The result is excellent, so much so that there are times when it’s hard to believe that what we’re seeing is computer-generated graphics and not a real person. demo also uses ray tracing generate highly realistic lighting, reflections, shadows, and caustics, but as you might have imagined, all of this has a significant cost in terms of resources and requires very powerful hardware to run smoothly.

I wanted to take the opportunity to see how Enemies performs on two of the most powerful graphics cards NVIDIA has on the market right now, and overall the result lived up to my expectations. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti scored an average 49 FPS and at least (1%) 12 FPS in 1440p with ultra quality, ray tracing enabled and DLSS in quality mode. With the same configuration, the GeForce RTX 4090 achieved 79 FPS and registered a minimum (1%) of 26 FPS.

in resolution 4K with ultra qualityray tracing and DLSS in maximum quality achieved by GeForce RTX 4090 on average 54 FPS and minimum (1%) 22 FPS. These are very good results, especially considering the graphical quality that this technical demo represents and the fact that we are also using ray tracing.

It is clear that the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti and GeForce RTX 4090 are graphics cards that they are ready to withstand the great generational leap, although in the end it’s the consoles that set the pace for developers, and unfortunately I don’t think we’ll see much progress in the short or medium term unless some developer dares to create PC exclusive games that are really able to take advantage of said platform’s potential. Cyberpunk 2077 was the only title so far that really went for it, which is why I said it was the best thing to happen on PC in a long time.
