Technology giant Google has confirmed that its voice assistant on Android will only support the dark theme, even if the theme is turned off in your smartphone’s settings. This change will only apply to smartphones running Android 13 and is similar to how Google Assistant works on other devices such as smartwatches and TVs.

The Google Assistant lite theme will no longer be available on Android devices, and the company says the change is intentional. Several users on Reddit and the Google IssueTracker page reported that Google Assistant on Android 13 only shows a dark theme even when their phone is turned on.

The lightweight theme for Google Assistant was available on Android devices, so users initially thought it was a bug and expected it to be fixed soon. However, Google has now officially announced that this change is not a bug and was made on purpose.

A comment on Google’s IssueTracker page confirmed that the voice assistant will only support the dark theme on smartphones in the coming days (first noted by AndroidPolice). The technology giant also announced that it has made the decision to make Google Assistant compatible on multiple devices.

Google TV, WearOS smartwatch, Android Auto smart display, and Nest Hub are some of the devices where Google Assistant has quietly shown a dark theme. Google Assistant supports an optional light mode on smartphones, but that will change when the company wants Android 13’s voice assistant to offer a similar experience to what it offers on other devices.
