Twitter employees filed a class action lawsuit against the company in San Francisco federal court over Elon Musk’s plan to fire nearly 3,700 people without proper notice in violation of federal and California law.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Bloomberg.

The company informed employees on Friday that it will issue an official letter about large-scale staff reductions to optimize costs. Musk plans to lay off half of its workforce as part of plans to cut costs on the platform, which it bought for $44 billion last month.

Instead, federal law (the Worker Regulation and Retraining Notification Act) prohibits large companies from mass layoffs without at least 60 days’ notice.

According to media reports, the lawsuit, among other things, asks the court to issue an order that requires Twitter to comply with the WARN Act and prohibits the company from asking its employees to sign documents waiving their right to participate in the lawsuit.

Attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan said, “We filed this lawsuit (November 3 – ed.) to let employees know they don’t have to give up their rights and have the opportunity to defend their rights.

It is also recorded that Liss-Riordan filed a lawsuit against Tesla Inc. For similar claims in June, when the Musk-led electric car maker laid off about 10% of its workforce.

Tesla later won, and in Austin’s decision in the case, a federal judge compelled the workers to file their cases in closed arbitration rather than in open court.

As reported by Ukrinform, on October 27, Elon Musk finalized an agreement to acquire the Twitter company for $44 billion. He dissolved the board of directors soon after purchasing Twitter and consolidated his control over the company.
