Social media platform Twitter is suing a plan to fire 3,700 people, which employees say the company did without adequate notice. The class action lawsuit was filed in San Francisco federal court late Thursday night.

The case, Cornet v. Twitter Inc., 22-cv-06857, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California.

The layoffs come nearly a week after businessman Elon Musk took over the social network and fired CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal and head of legal policy Vijay Gadde. It’s part of Musk’s moves to streamline the company’s operations and increase Twitter’s profitability.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) Act protects workers, their families, and local communities by requiring that most employers with 100 or more employees give their employees at least 60 calendar days’ notice prior to closures and layoffs.

As such, the complaint filed by attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan requests the court to limit Twitter to comply with the WARN Act and for the company to force employees to sign documents that could deprive them of their right to participate in the lawsuit.

“We brought this case tonight to let employees know that they don’t have to give up their rights and that they have a choice to exercise their rights,” Liss-Riordan said. Said.

In June, Liss-Riordan also represented employees at Musk’s electric car company Tesla when the organization laid off 10% of its workforce. The lawsuit sought compensation and benefits for a 60-day notice period. Musk described the case as “trivial” and “preventive”.

“Now we’ll see if this country continues to meddle in its employee protection laws,” Liss-Riordan said of Musk. “It seems to follow the same model as Tesla.”
