Fears that Ukraine’s troops might lose access to Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet service intensified last week after a significant number of satellite dishes failed.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to CNN.

The most recent outage occurred on October 24 and affected 1,300 terminal blocks that Ukraine bought from a British company in March and used for military operations.

In September, SpaceX sent a letter to the Pentagon claiming it had spent nearly $100 million in Ukraine funding Starlink and could no longer continue to do so. The letter asked the Department of Defense to take over most of the funding, which the company estimated would amount to tens of millions of dollars a month.

A few days later, Musk reversed course, saying SpaceX had withdrawn his request.

At the same time, negotiations between SpaceX and the Ministry of Defense continue.

SpaceX charged the Ukrainian military $2,500 per month to maintain communications with each of the 1,300 terminals, bringing the total cost to about $20 million by September.

In a letter sent from SpaceX to the Pentagon in September, it was noted that there are close to 20,000 Starlink terminals in Ukraine. Then by his own admission Space XMany have been bought, in whole or in part, with foreign financing, including from the US, Polish and UK governments. The letter claims that these sources also pay about 30% of the monthly connection bill.
