Google’s Look to Speak application, which facilitates communication for people with motor and speech disorders, is now available in Ukraine.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Ministry of Health reported this with a link to the official blog of Google Ukraine.
The Ministry of Health reminded that Google almost two years ago introduced Look to Speak, an application for Android that allows you to select ready-made phrases and play them aloud thanks to the movements of the consumer’s eyes. Since then, the app has been made available in 18 languages.
Recently, Look to Speak was made available in Ukrainian with support from First Lady Olena Zelenska.
The president’s wife emphasized that the ability to communicate and interact with the people around him is part of everyone’s basic needs: “For most, it is imperceptible and automatic, such as the breathing process. However, due to various circumstances, a person may lose this ability, unable to speak or use a computer, tablet, mobile phone, etc. He cannot use the phone and other devices. Especially when war increases the risks of being in such a situation every day, we must unite as a society and help each other as much as possible to overcome these terrible conditions.”
One of the examples of Ukraine’s responsible interaction with world technology leaders is the localization of Google’s Look to Speak application.
“It helps people with musculoskeletal and speech disorders to communicate using eye movements. This removes barriers to communication, giving everyone the opportunity to be heard. Ukrainian public institutions in the field of health care, medical institutions and all those who need it are now advanced digital tools adapted to the needs of Ukrainian users. It’s a good thing that he can use solutions. I’m sure initiatives like Look and Talk will not only open new opportunities for our citizens, but will also set an example for other technology companies that are helping Ukraine right now.” said.
Technologies implemented in the app can help people express their daily needs, emotions and express their personalities.
According to Oksana Lyalka, founder and president of the Ukrainian Language and Speech Association, the number of people with motor and speech impairments is probably increasing due to injuries and conditions caused by the war. In addition, indirect effects such as stress and malnutrition increase the risk of stroke, which can lead to motor and speech disorders, and access to treatment for these disorders is limited.
As reported by Ukrinform, Zelenska opened Europe’s largest technology conference, Web Summit 2022, in Lisbon, while inviting IT professionals from all over the world to help Ukraine.
