Researchers at the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EFPL) in Switzerland have created an edible drone that can become a source of nutrition for hungry people or in situations of risk. Drone wings are made from a mixture of gelatin and rice crackers. The drone could be used in rescue missions and deliver vital calories to those in need, the researchers say.

Wings built with mixture of gelatin and rice crackers. The rice is assembled into a laser-cut hexagonal shape, and the gelatin works like a glue that holds the wing structure together during flight. The EFPL researchers claim that taste was not taken into account during the initial stages of the project, and only the nutritional potential of the drone was taken into account.

The edible drone was unveiled at the International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Systems (IEEE/RSJ). OUR inspiration came from how similar styrofoam sheet rice crackers look. According to them, this similarity gave rise to the idea of creating an edible wing.
The model is practically a Mavic 3 clone without a TV camera, including obstacle sensors throughout…
Project author Bokeon Kwak says the edible part of the drone has a good calorie content and can be used in hard-to-reach rescue situations. He also argues that the drone is not a tasty meal, but an emergency option. “A crunchy rice cracker flavor with a hint of pure gelatin.”
The idea is undoubtedly interesting, but of limited application. Consideration needs to be given to storage or whether drone production will be on demand. One way or another, the project is an initiative to use drones in something positive, instead of the constant militarization observed in recent months with the constant creation of drones for military purposes. Now a team of researchers has developed a project to use them to save lives.
