“I see Twitter being handed over to someone who wants to further politicize this network as a serious problem,” said SPD co-chair Lars Klingbeil. He believes that “consistent measures” should be taken in case of “further attack on pluralism of opinion”.

Jens Zimmerman, a member of the Bundestag from the SPD, described the development of the situation as “extremely critical”. According to him, given the halving of staff, Twitter will not be able to meet the requirements of European legislation on content moderation and responding to complaints.

“The Federal Department of Justice must take greater control of Twitter and act swiftly and decisively in case of violations,” Zimmerman said. He added that he expects a decisive step from German Justice Minister Mark Buschmann.

According to DW, the Federal Ministry of Justice in Germany is responsible for complaints about problematic content on social networks and can punish platform operators if necessary.

In the opinion of the SPD representative, if the conditions are not met, fines may be imposed not only on Twitter as a legal entity, but also on individual managers responsible for these business areas.
