Apparently, for at least the next few years, Apple will continue to use the Qualcomm 5G modem. That is, the upcoming iPhone 15 will still have third-party chips.

Unfortunately for the iPhone owner, the 5G modem they developed is not expected until 2025.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 with Qualcomm chips

Apple has been hard at work developing its own modem chip for several years, including acquiring Intel’s chip business, but still hasn’t reached a single satisfactory point that gives the company the independence it needs to work only with in-house developed solutions. Therefore, it is predicted that both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 will use chips from Qualcomm.

The partnership between the two companies was signed in 2019 and includes a six-year deal that sees Apple use Qualcomm’s 5G modems, including royalties that bring in a generous share of the chip company’s profits.

Recently, the global technology production chain has been hit by the pandemic and other global setbacks, and Qualcomm would have lost millions in revenue, which could impact Apple’s technology supply in 2023, with the company estimated to only get a 20% forecast for the year.

Qualcomm is one of the leaders in high-end chip design, and Apple knows it can’t compete with it at the moment, especially since it hasn’t had positive results in regards to internal chip development.

Experts believe that the completion of work on Apple’s internal 5G modem will only be possible in 2025. These predictions lead us to believe that the iPhone 16 line, which will likely launch in 2024, will be equipped with Qualcomm-made chips, while the iPhone 15 line may be equipped with the Snapdragon X70.
