Tech giant Meta plans to begin mass layoffs this week, according to The Wall Street Journal. The layoffs are expected to affect thousands of employees and the announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, according to broadcast sources.
The planned layoffs will be the first major layoffs in the company’s 18-year history. In percentage though, the reduction will be less than Twitter.
Meta currently has more than 87,000 employees, according to The Wall Street Journal. An official announcement on this is scheduled for Wednesday. Company officials told employees to cancel non-essential travel starting this week.
A Meta representative declined to comment, citing a recent statement from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, saying the company will “focus investments on a small number of priority areas of development.” In September, The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta plans to cut costs by at least 10% in the coming months, partially by cutting staff.
