Xbox Series X could offer lower quality graphics modes to reduce power consumption

Power consumption of technology has become one of the main concerns of consumers, in fact a few days ago our readers made it clear that they prefer efficiency over raw power. Microsoft is aware of this reality and is therefore considering the possibility of implementing a new one Low power graphics modes on Xbox Series X.

The information comes from an official source, specifically from survey conducted on the Xbox Insider channel, where users were asked if they were worried about their electricity bills and if they would be willing to lower the quality of graphics offered by their consoles in order to reduce electricity consumption. Obviously, it would be necessary to assume a number of important sacrifices, theoretically centered on:

  • Use a lower resolution. In the case of the Xbox Series X, we’d be talking about downscaling to 1440p or 1080p.
  • Decrease the frame rate per second. In this case, we would be in the range of 30 or 40 FPS and not 60 FPS+.
  • Lower the graphics quality level and turn off settings that are very demanding, such as ray tracing.

Although nothing has been confirmed yet, this survey fits perfectly into the “green” strategy of the Redmond giant, which has been working on reduce the impact of their activities on the environment and become a “green” company.

However, it shouldn’t be too difficult for Microsoft to introduce these lower-quality graphics modes to reduce the power consumption of the Xbox Series X it will all depend on how it is implemented and what sacrifices it will makeas they might eventually require a More collaboration from developers. Since some are “tired” of the effort put into development for the Xbox Series S, I think the introduction of low-power modes that give them extra work could cause some pretty deep complaints.

I have to say that personally this idea seems quite right to me and I think it would be a success on Microsoft’s part, although I don’t think it will be easy to fully implement it on the Xbox Series X (it could also reach the Xbox Series S) for that , what it would mean at the development level, if it is not limited to reducing the resolution of games. I also find it odd because it would blur the already thin line that separates consoles from PC a bit more. And you, do you think it’s a good idea?
