While there has been a lot of news about Twitter in recent days, undoubtedly the most extensive was the news of the massive layoffs Elon Musk made just days after taking control of the social network. Some layoffs that, like almost all of the billionaire’s moves during these chaotic 10 days, follow a very specific goal: to grow Twitter’s monetization as much and as quickly as possible. And it’s so little by little, but inexorably, the deadline for the first loan interest payment is approaching that he requested funding for the operation. And as we told you, these are no small things, because they will amount to about 1,000 million dollars. Yes, only the interest, without considering the amortization of part of the debt.
This led, as we already expected on Friday, to layoffs… let’s say in a little or no selective way. After hours of rumours, it was confirmed that entire departments had been let go, as well as all (or the vast majority) of Twitter’s territorial representation in other regions, as would happen in Spain. If someone was looking for a practical application of “killing flies with cannon fire”, this might be a good example.
Consequences of such actions they didn’t expect, even less so when we consider that in doing so Twitter may have violated the laws governing mass firings in the state of California, which would have already led to mass complaints against the company. Something that, of course, can make a big hole in the very accounts that Musk intended to clean up with such a drastic move.
But the effects of indiscriminate dismissals do not end there (which is no small thing) and the fact is that over the weekend and especially yesterday Sunday, a rumor began to spread that Twitter contacted some of the fired employees and asked them to return. Information so surprising that in the absence of any reliable source it seemed more like a joke than anything else. However, reality has already shown us on many occasions that it can beat fiction, so the confirmation came from Bloomberg.
According to sources cited in the said publication, Twitter is contacting “dozens» former workers who were informed of their dismissal last Friday. In some cases, it is claimed that they were fired in error because the company intended to keep them on the payroll. In other cases, however, their release would initially be approved, albeit a posteriori. society would realize that such workers are needed for the social network and its future plans.
So now Twitter would face a simultaneous class action(s), which can be brought both by the employees fired last Friday and by the previous board because, as we told you at the time, the company brought them as a justified dismissal to avoid paying the millionaire compensation that would correspond to them. And on the other hand, the conditions that may be posed by the laid-off workers that he now intends to reclaimbecause with this move, Twitter has revealed that they are quite important for future plans.
