Social network Twitter has announced that it has put a “grey mark” on some popular accounts to indicate that they are official.

This is reported by Ukrinform with reference to AR.

As noted, the current system that supposedly uses blue ticks to verify the authenticity of an account will soon disappear for those who don’t pay a monthly fee of $7.99 for the service. This tariff also includes some bonus features – less ads and the ability to get more visibility for tweets.

Experts expressed concern that allowing anyone to check the box for a fee could lead to impersonation, the spread of misinformation and fraud.

The gray mark is an obvious compromise. However, this can lead to further confusion as Twitter users who have become accustomed to the blue tick as a sign of authenticity will now have to look for a less obvious “official” sign.

The platform’s current verification system has been in place since 2009 and was created to verify that well-known and public accounts are who they say they are.

As reported by Ukrinform, on October 27, Elon Musk finalized an agreement to acquire the Twitter company for $44 billion. He dissolved the board of directors soon after the takeover and consolidated his control over the company.
