The wait for Google VPN was long, but finally and thankfully looks like it’s coming to an end. And it is that, as we can read in The Verge, Google’s “anonymous” browsing service will finally reach laptops and desktop systems based on Windows and macOS, thus confirming the company’s plans communicated for quite some time, since the Service was originally launched at the end of 2020, they are nearing completion.

Recall that the search engine company offers its virtual private network service at no additional cost to all users.Google One premium tier users. In case you don’t know the difference between one and the other, you should know that the 200 gigabyte plan (the lower ones are no longer available for new hires) is the only one that doesn’t have this label and therefore doesn’t include the use of Google VPN. The rest, from two terabytes and above, includes this service.

Originally released only on Android, it finally arrived on iOS earlier this year, good news for Apple device users, but a few months later we learned (we learned) about Apple’s operating system’s problems with this type of connection. However, this launch has us thinking that it can’t take too long for Google’s VPN to migrate to desktop systems. Finally I watched it a few months longer than you think, but at least it was in the same year.

As we told you then, Google’s VPN has one point very much in its favor and another very much against it. The downside is that unlike other VPN services, this one it does not allow us to use it to access content from streaming platforms in other countries. And it’s because you already know that the catalogs of these services change from country to country, so if you simulate a connection from, for example, the United States, you have access to the catalog of services in that region.

The good news is that just like we can share the storage we have contracted with members of our family group, we’ll also be able to share Google’s VPN with them, so the whole family unit can protect their browsing activity with a single premium subscription. Let us recall that the price of the same in annual mode starts at 99 euros for a two-terabyte plan.

Offering added value to online storage plans is one of the main fronts for tech companies in this market looking to reach home users on a massive scale (implementing these services in an enterprise environment is quite different). However, Apple already offers its Apple Relay service in iCloud+ and Apple One plans with exactly the same limitation I mentioned above about Google VPN.

So now the ball is increasingly in the court private VPN service providers. For now, they are playing with the trick of allowing the choice of country from which to establish an outgoing connection, but in time this may not be enough to compete with the proposal of Google, Apple and the rest of the technology companies that join. when offering VPN access to your clients.
