A consortium for semiconductor production was formed in Japan

Eight major companies in Japan are joining forces to produce the next generation of semiconductors.

This was reported by NHK, Ukrinform reports.

The consortium includes companies Toyota and Sony, as well as telecommunications giant NTT. The name of the consortium will be Rapidus.

The new company will produce the latest semiconductors that are indispensable in areas such as driverless cars, supercomputers and digital smart cities.

The companies plan to start domestic production within five years.

Semiconductor manufacturers around the world are competing to design models with thinner chips to improve performance.

The fineness of microcircuits is measured in nanometers. South Korean Samsung started mass production of three nanometer semiconductors in June. A new Japanese company wants to produce semiconductors two nanometers and thinner.

As Ukrinform reported, the American multinational company Micron will spend up to $100 billion in the next two decades to build a new plant for the production of computer microcircuits in the northern part of the state of New York.
