Alas, Amazon is joining the list technology companies that are making significant downsizing between your templates. Of course, the most famous cases in this regard is Twitter, which launched the first batch ten days ago and today we learned that it pulled out the scissors again yesterday, reducing its workforce to less than half of what it was. a few weeks ago, and also Meta, which is about to close entire divisions with massive layoffs of roughly 13% of its workforce, roughly 11,000 workers.

These are, as I said, the most well-known cases, but we have also learned about them in recent weeks major cuts at Lyft, Stripe and Snap, among others, confirming that we are facing a phase of significant decline in this sector. And it’s because the pandemic and imprisonment paradoxically had positive effects for many of them, due to the global circumstances the use of their services increased significantly, but in recent months the situation has already returned to normal and what’s worse Economic forecasts for the future are not reassuring at all .

In this way, week after week we see these companies making the biggest layoffs in their history, and in all cases these are actions aimed at least in principle at improving the balance sheet. However, we had the opportunity to see some cases, especially Twitter and Facebook, in which the reasons for the dismissals would clearly be found, in the extremely wrong decisions of the responsible persons: Bet all in metaversion in the case of Meta and… well, let’s say Elon Musk’s own purchase of the social network, in the case of Twitter.

In the case of Amazon, reported by The New York Times, Amazon will soon begin laying off roughly 10,000 employees. The first will take place this week, according to the newspaper, and will focus mainly on Amazon’s device division, then on that dedicated to its voice assistant Alexa, as well as on the retail division and human resources. The numbers are not yet final, says an anonymous source quoted by the newspaper:

Total layoffs continue to adjust. But if it stays around 10,000, that would represent about 3% of Amazon’s corporate workforce and less than 1% of its global workforce of more than 1.5 million, which is mostly hourly workers.“.

With these numbers, it seems that we are talking about a large cut, but proportionally it is lower than Meta and Twitter. However, it’s surprising that Amazon would scale back its device and Alexa divisions, as both seemed to be priorities for the company, to the point that the company surprised us with its acquisition of iRobot a few months ago. , manufacturers of the popular Roomba vacuum cleaners, and now with the introduction of new devices and renovations of existing ones.

So it will be necessary to see the rate of layoffs in these departments, because it is rather strange that Amazon decided to do a 180-degree turn in this regard. It seems more likely, as I suggested in the reports of the second round of shooting on Twitter, that we will again at least partially reduced talent retentionsomething that is very common in the industry so far, but is aiming to change in the near future.
