SpaceX purchased ad space on Twitter, according to internal records reviewed by CNBC. This is because many leading brands have removed their ads from the platform. The ad package purchased by SpaceX is valued at more than $250,000 and allows the company to rank its brand high on the Twitter timeline all day long.
According to the documents, SpaceX plans to introduce Starlink products first in Australia and then in Spain. Frankly, it’s unusual for SpaceX to buy ad space on Twitter, but given that they now have the same CEO, things like this might become a little more common.
Twitter users in the two target countries will likely be asked to subscribe to Starlink. While CEO Elon Musk likely wants $250,000 in advertising revenue from companies he doesn’t own, this move has two benefits.
First, SpaceX pays for Twitter, which means SpaceX essentially gets free advertising because it doesn’t have to pay a third-party company. Second, Twitter can showcase ad offerings that can persuade other brands to re-select advertising space on the platform.
Brands that removed their ads from the platform, citing Elon’s content control, include General Motors, Audi, Volkswagen, General Mills, Pfizer, and United Airlines. It is interesting to note that General Motors, Audi and Volkswagen are direct competitors of Elon’s other company, Tesla. Elon’s latest move may be to try to show brands that Twitter is a good enough platform to advertise SpaceX and they should come back and advertise there.
