How to save content before leaving Twitter

Very simple, as we said:

  • Sign in to your account Twitter on the web.
  • In the sidebar, click More > Settings & Support > Settings & Privacy.

  • On the Settings page, select your account > Download data file.
  • Verify your identity with a code sent by email or text message.
  • You will then enter a page to download your data file. Click “Request File”.

Twitter will start collecting all your data and creating this interactive file. According to the company, this process can take up to 24 hours. You’ll receive a notification via email or app when it’s done.

Just go to Settings & Privacy > Your Account > Download the file with your data get the file in compressed ZIP format. Download and unzip to your computer and run the .html file.

This file it will open in your default browser and there you can browse all your tweets, likes and direct messages using the sidebar on the left. Although the file will open in your browser, all data will be hosted locally on your computer. Consider saving to an external drive or cloud storage service.

You can now leave Twitter if you feel like it… But with a copy of the content you’ve contributed to the network in your custody.
