Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs. GeForce RTX 4090: twice as slow with ray tracing

AMD has released new performance figures for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, its upcoming “flagship” for the high-performance mainstream consumer graphics card market, and the truth is that the numbers show a noticeable performance improvement over the generation above, but they confirm what has been an open secret that this model it won’t compete with the GeForce RTX 4090in fact, it is quite beyond this.

Radeon RX 7900 XTX performance

See the attached chart. Radeon RX 7900 XTX achieves 24 FPS in Dying Light 2 with high ray tracing, maximum quality and 4K resolution, i.e. twice the performance of the Radeon RX 6950 XT. In Cyberpunk 2077 with maximum quality and ultra-low 4K ray tracing, the improvement is also clear, as it achieves 21 FPS and again clearly exceeds the Radeon RX 6950 XT’s 13 FPS. We also have substantial improvements in the remaining tests, and FSR will help you achieve perfectly playable levels.

If we compare these results with the ones I got in my GeForce RTX 4090 review, we can see that the differences are important. In Cyberpunk 2077 with maximum quality, 4K resolution and crazy ray tracing, which is a much more demanding level than the ultra mode used by the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, the NVIDIA graphics solution managed 39 FPS on average, and with DLSS 3 enabled in quality mode, performance shot up to 104 FPS. In Dying Light 2, the difference is also huge, as is the GeForce RTX 4090 56 FPS on average and 93 FPS with DLSS enabled in quality mode. To better illustrate the difference in the performance of both graphics cards, here are some graphics.

AMD did good job with Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XTAfter all, these represent a significant improvement in performance compared to the previous generation, and the difference in ray tracing between the RDNA2 and RDNA3 architectures is so great that the latter almost doubles the performance of the former. This new graphics generation offers more advanced image connection options and it has a large amount of graphics memory, two data that should also be highlighted.

In favor of AMD, it must also be said that the price of its new generation of graphics cards is more affordable than the GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080. However, the performance data clearly shows that This price difference is not accidental and that it is more than justified by the difference in performance that exists. I can’t give you any data on the GeForce RTX 4080’s performance yet, but soon you’ll have a full list of results that will let you see how it stacks up against the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and you can judge for yourself.

It’s clear that NVIDIA is still in the lead when it comes to raw performance, though AMD you have taken another step in the right direction with Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and this will make them compete again. This is crucial for consumers, because without competition, prices would skyrocket and innovation would stagnate.
