By May, Microsoft officially confirmed that the company is developing a cheaper Xbox stream. Now The Verge has been told that development on the device codenamed “Keystone” has been halted. According to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, this is because the device would become too expensive if Microsoft went with better hardware.
Phil Spencer wanted to launch the device for between $99 and $129. The price will be pretty close to the Xbox Series S due to the processor Microsoft wants to use and the need to offer a controller package. The latest Keystone prototype is reportedly functional and offers a user interface that largely matches the Xbox Series X.
According to Phil Spencer, the team behind the project managed to develop this prototype in just nine months before the entire project was shelved. The Xbox boss insists buyers shouldn’t expect a cheaper Xbox focused on streaming in the next few years, but Phil Spencer doesn’t want to give up on the idea in the long run.
But if Microsoft continues to expand its partnerships with TV manufacturers, the need for such a device may disappear by then. Because, for example, if you buy an up-to-date Smart TV from Samsung, you will be able to stream games through Xbox Game Pass without having to connect external devices.
