First private rocket Vikram-S launched in India

Indian startup Skyroot Aerospace, backed by the Indian Space Research and Development Organization (ISRO), launched the country’s first private Vikram-S rocket into space on Friday.

Pawan Kumar Chandan, co-founder of Skyroot Aerospace, stated that after the launch, the mission not only symbolized India’s first private rocket launch, but also “the potential of a new India”.

“The rocket launch will help test and validate many of the technologies in the Vikram series orbital-class space launch vehicles, including many subsystems and technologies that will be tested in the pre- and post-launch phases,” the company said.

The rocket, which weighs 546 kilograms, was launched from the space base on the island of Sriharikota and reached an altitude of 89.5 kilometers. It will perform a suborbital mission.

Skyroot Aerospace is located in the south tech hub of Hyderabad. It was founded by former ISRO engineers who raised $68 million, according to Tracxn. It is the first initiative to sign MoU with ISRO.
