Four new metric prefixes have been added to the International System of Units to denote very large and very small values.
As Ukrinform reports, this was reported by the British National Physical Laboratory, which is leading international efforts to introduce the new prefixes.
“In November 2022, at the General Conference on Weights and Measures, scientists and representatives of governments from around the world voted to expand the list of prefixes used in the International System of Units. This decision means that four new prefixes can now be used to indicate metrics (two above the range and two below),” the message reads.
This is stated to be the first expansion within the International System of Units since 1991.
Thus, “ronna” for 10 at 27 degrees and “ketta” for 10 at 30 degrees were added to the list of prefixes. At the other end of the range, the prefix “ronto” was added to denote 10 to the minus 27th power, and “kekto” to denote 10 to the minus 30th power.
“This change is due to the increasing requirements of digital storage and data science using prefixes at the top of the unit range. At the same time, prefixes for very small numbers are useful in quantum science and particle physics,” explained the British National Physical Laboratory.
