Microsoft fixes controversial browser selection mode in Windows 11

Windows 11 users who do not use Microsoft Edge as their default web browser are lucky and the company has decided to provide it tracing back a change that made it difficult to choose an alternative browser and to which competitors like Mozilla or Vivaldi have publicly complained, as well as many users around the Internet.

Without going any further, just a few days ago we published a guide to change the browser in Windows 11 to help anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they choose something outside of Edge, because Microsoft has not made it easy at all. On the contrary, and what is worse, with pretexings that even the one who formulated them does not believe.

What should be a process of just a few clicks, given the importance of an application such as a web browser and the fact that Microsoft Edge isn’t even the most popular on the market – even though it’s already second in the table, something that hasn’t happened for a long time – has become A cumbersome process, aimed more at making adventurers who dared to give up than anything else.

Instead of switching to the Shift option and selecting a specific browser as the system default, as is the case in Windows 10, Windows 11 forces the user to select the browser as the default for each extension and protocol associated with the application typein this case a web browser: HTM, HTML, PDF, SHTML, SVG, WEBP, XHT, XHTML, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS … Madness disguised as customizable capacity that no one has bought.

This may not seem like it, because everyone can use the browser they want, but things change as you use it, and if you have to call a different application for each file extension and protocol … There is no way to have a logical experience. In fact, it’s quite the opposite, and to make matters worse, it doesn’t happen when you want to go back to Microsoft Edge from another browser.

By the way: have you noticed that the browser is also in charge of the PDF document viewer function? This was made clear in the latest version of Microsoft Edge, and it makes more sense here that an application can be separated from a protocol or extension because there are specific applications for it.

But back to the topic, if you use or plan to use Windows 11 and Microsoft Edge is not your favorite browser, you can rest easy because you won’t have to complicate your lifebecause the latest system update, which is already spreading among all users, comes to fix the clutter or, which is the same, leave things as they were: by clicking you can change the browser with everything it entails.

However, this is not enough. Although this change is already underway, there are still features in Windows 11 (but also less in Windows 10) that maintain Microsoft’s position abuse in this regard, such as redirects to Edge from the search menu, message drop-down list, and more… society doesn’t seem to get that far. So it’s best not to use them.
