IAEA conducts wastewater inspection at Fukushima-1 NPP
The International Atomic Energy Agency plans to publish a report on the safety of the water used to cool the fuel at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant in the spring of 2023 before it begins to discharge fuel into the ocean.

This was reported by NHK, Ukrinform reports.

It was noted that the IAEA, at the request of the Japanese government, controls the safety of wastewater according to international standards.

“A group of IAEA experts conducted a five-day inspection in Japan that began Monday. They toured the nuclear power plant and met with government officials and the operator of the nuclear plant, Tokyo Denryoku Electric Power Company.”

At the last press conference, Gustavo Caruso, head of the IAEA Office of Nuclear Protection and Safety, said that the group analyzed the technical aspects of the project in conditions of transparency. He said the agency could make an assessment that would “provide a sense of security not only for Japan but for the entire international community, including neighboring South Korea and China.”

According to NHK, the IAEA also said it plans to conduct a further series of inspections in Japan in mid-January, followed by a comprehensive report before the planned discharge of treated water.

As reported, at the end of last year, the company that operates the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant submitted a plan to the Japan Nuclear Regulatory Commission to discharge the wastewater into the sea.

We’re talking about a large amount of water used to cool molten nuclear fuel. It is processed to remove most of the radioactive materials and stored in containers on the territory of the nuclear power plant.

As it will be remembered, an earthquake occurred in March 2011 on the northeastern coast of Japan, causing a tsunami. A huge wave covered the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, causing the worst accident since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
