The Irish Data Protection Commission, the main privacy watchdog in the European Union, fined Meta $277 million (€265 million) for leaking information from over half a billion users.
As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Bloomberg.
The investigation concerned the posting of personal information about 533 million Facebook users worldwide, including their phone numbers and email addresses, on a hacked website.
The company itself said that the published data is out of date and the issue was discovered and fixed in 2019.
Immediately after the fine was announced on Monday, November 28, Meta said that protecting the privacy and security of people’s data is fundamental to running its business, and that the company is cooperating fully with regulators.
It was noted that the fine imposed on Meta is the third largest under the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
As Ukrinform reported, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has fined the American company Google $113 million for anti-competitive activities in the country.
