Sony will supply Apple with state-of-the-art image sensors for use in the iPhone 15 series smartphones. The new sensor from Sony Semiconductor Solutions roughly doubles the saturation signal level per pixel compared to conventional image sensors. This coincides with the description of the new technology Sony talked about last year.

We’re talking about the industry’s first multi-layer CMOS sensor. While the photodiodes and pixel transistors of traditional CMOS sensors are formed in the same layer, the new sensor is located in different layers. This allows you to expand the dynamic range, increase the light sensitivity and reduce the noise level.

However, this technology has not yet been used in any of Sony’s sensors. It is unknown whether Apple will be the first to get such sensors. It is also not clear whether it will be used on all iPhone 15s or just older models. Given the trends in recent years and all the rumors about Apple’s intention to separate younger and older iPhones, it’s likely that new sensors will only make their way to older models or even just the iPhone 15 Ultra.
