A team of US researchers has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based deep learning model that can predict the risk of death from heart attack or stroke over a 10-year period from just a single chest X-ray.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Euronews.

The researchers trained the model to look for patterns in X-ray images associated with atherosclerosis, the main cause of cardiovascular disease.

Risk is calculated using a score based on variables such as age, gender, race, blood pressure, hypertension treatment, smoking, type 2 diabetes, blood tests.

Statins are recommended for patients with a 10-year risk of 7.5% or greater.

“Our deep learning model offers a potential solution for population-based cardiovascular disease risk screening using existing chest X-rays. Because chest X-rays are widely available, our approach can help identify high-risk individuals. Jakob Weiss, a radiologist with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiovascular Tomography Research Center, said. “This type of screening could be used to identify people who would benefit from taking statins but are not currently receiving treatment,” he said.

As reported by Ukrinform, a team of Chinese scientists from Sun Yat-sen University’s Center for Ophthalmology has successfully used artificial intelligence (AI) to develop models to predict the occurrence and progression of glaucoma.
