Aircraft Corporation Airbus plans to stop buying Russian titanium in a few months.
This was stated by Michael Scholhorn, executive director of Airbus Defense & Space, Ukrinform reported, citing Reuters.
“As for Titania, we are in the process of breaking off[ties – ed.]with Russia. It’s a matter of months, not years… I can’t give you an exact date, it’s a complicated process with certification and everything else needed in aviation, but it will happen,” Schollhorn said. at a briefing.
According to him, Airbus currently buys a certain percentage of Russian titanium, but the company is “clearly on track to become independent of it.”
According to the 2019 report, Airbus used Russian titanium to build the NH90 and Tiger military helicopters. Schollhorn noted that the company no longer needs titanium for military products, but little remains for civilian aircraft.
Airbus looks for alternative suppliers, while rival Boeing suspends titanium purchases from Russia in the spring. Industry sources say the company has increased its purchases from the US and Japan. However, it can take years to certify new suppliers to strict aviation standards.
Russia is the largest producer of titanium, it is mainly used in aircraft engines and landing gear for large aircraft.
