How to use a Wi-Fi adapter from an old tablet?

No need to throw away your old tablet device. It has many details that can serve for quite a long time. Such a useful detail is the Wi-Fi module. As a rule, it is always soldered separately and is an independent miniature board.

Detail:

  • a Wi-Fi module from a tablet with an antenna;
  • USB cable;
  • two 1N4007 diodes;

Connecting the Wi-Fi module from the tablet

We solder the module from the board. There is a designation of the connecting contacts on the front or the back: plus, minus, data, antenna.

We take the USB cable, clean the contacts and solder them. Color separation is always standard: black is a negative source, red is a plus, white and green are forward and reverse data. We solder the contacts from the USB to the Wi-Fi module, except for the positive power.

All electronics of the tablet are supplied with a voltage of 3.3 V. It is therefore not possible to connect directly to a PC. It is necessary to relieve tension. Two diodes connected in series will help us with this. They reduce the voltage to about 3.4-3.6 V. Solder them between the module and the power supply.

You need to solder the antenna from the tablet board. For 2.4 GHz, its length should be 3 cm. Solder it to the module.

We are testing. We insert the USB into the port of a laptop or personal computer. In most cases, no additional driver installation will be required and the new device will identify itself in the system without any problems. A list of available networks captured by the module will be displayed. We connect to our network and use the internet. Source
