Google announces new Android and Wear OS features

Android phones continue to evolve, both in software and hardware. While manufacturers like Samsung and Qualcomm mostly develop their hardware, Google is responsible for software development. Finally, the company is rolling out a few new features for Android phones and Wear OS smartwatches. These features, which are expected to be available soon, will bring many innovations to the Android interface we love.

New Android features are coming

  • Add some holiday cheer to your photos and messages

Google Photos has recently added styles to the collage editor so you can create collages from your favorite shots to share with friends and family. Finally, the company has added two new artists: Australian visual duo DABSMYLA and renowned watercolor artist Yao Chen Design. Just select your photos, design and change the layout with simple drag and drop controls.

  • Emoji Kitchen also has new emojis

Emoji Kitchen also features new emojis that can be combined into creative sticker combinations using Gboard. Add 💙 holidays ⛄️ ❄️ to your messages with compatible emojis.

  • New reading mode on Android

Capture your favorite content the way you want. The new reading mode on Android offers an accessible reading experience that can benefit people with low vision or dyslexia. Once installed, it adds customizable display options to your preferences such as contrast, font and size, and speed-controlled speech synthesis.

  • New search widget on YouTube home screen

You can also easily access content with the new search widget on the YouTube home screen. You can go directly to your video library, short videos or subscriptions with a quick tap on the home screen.

  • Stream video directly from Google TV

Sometimes it’s easier to find something to watch on your phone than on TV. The Google TV app already makes it easy to use your phone to find movies and shows from all your streaming services. And starting next week, you’ll be able to stream directly to a compatible TV from the Google TV app with one tap. You can still view other options and use your device as a remote control while navigating.

  • Common use of digital car keys

With Digital Car Key, you can lock, unlock and start your compatible car using just your phone. You can now share your compatible digital car key with friends and family on Pixel and iPhone (coming soon on some Android 12 and later phones). You can see and change who has access to your car in the digital wallet app on your phone.

  • New Wear OS features

As we use our smartwatches to do more, Wear OS tiles make it easy to see important information at a glance. You can already use the Google Maps tile to start navigating from anywhere to your home or office. And now Google is adding new parts so you can do more with your watch. For example, connect with your favorite people and view sunrise and sunset times to plan your day.

The company has also updated the Google Keep app for Wear OS to make notes and tasks written on your phone appear the same on your watch. View tags and contributors to stay organized. Whether you’re looking at notes on your phone or watch, custom backgrounds, photos and graphics make it easy to see what’s important to you.

You’ll be able to use Google Assistant to have the adidas Running app track your physical activity (up to 30 different types of exercise) over the next week or so. When you say “OK, Google, start running with adidas Running”, the app opens and your smartwatch starts tracking your speed, distance and heart rate.
