If you’re an Apple device user, you’ll remember that over a year ago, the company announced that it was finally giving in to growing demand from regulators and users alike, and that it would launch a self-service repair program for its users in the short term. A 180-degree turn with respect to the closure that Apple had until then in relation to users being able to repair their devices themselves. With the service already in place, we learned that the company sends the user a huge set of tools along with instructions on the steps to take to perform the repair, which in all cases considered for this service means replacing one part for another.
Months after its announcement, back in April of this year, Apple finally launched self-service repair in the United States with more than 200 replacement parts for the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and the third-generation iPhone SE, as well as the promise that it will soon be expanded to include support and parts for MacBooks (strangely there is no mention of iPads) and that the service will be expanded to other geographies at the end of the same year 2022.
And indeed it was at the end of this year, but on schedule Apple has confirmed that the self-service repair service is now available in several European countries, including Spainand with coverage for both iPhone models listed above, as well as some MacBook models, specifically the following:
As you can see, the common denominator of all supported devices is that they are equipped with Apple Silicon, models with Intel silicon are outside the self-service repair program.
With regard to the operation of the program, everything begins with access to the website of the service. Once there, the best place to start is by accessing your device’s repair manual. This will let you know if the repair you want to do is one of the repairs offered by this Apple service or if it is not your case and therefore you will have to resort to a technical service. In addition, this document will also allow you to verify the complexity of the process that you will have to go through. And it is because, even with all the indications and the relevant tools, it is not a simple procedure, it requires precision and a certain technical foundation, so it is not suitable for everyone.
Once you have documented the process, you can request the necessary parts and tools to perform the repair. Keep in mind, of course, that you’ll need to buy the part you want to replace, and that Apple will also send you all the necessary tools that you’ll need to return when the job is done, and that at that point the company asks you to also send the replaced part for recycling, i although this point is of course optional.
