Defense concern Rafael, operating in the Israeli market, is engaged in the development of a laser anti-missile system. The project aims to reduce the cost of intercepting missiles. It was learned the other day that Lockheed Martin, one of the largest contractors of the Pentagon, decided to participate in the implementation of the project.

Three years ago, the leadership of the Israeli Ministry of Defense informed the public about a breakthrough in the development of a laser anti-missile system. The Rafael concern is responsible for the design of the ground-based anti-missile defense system. In turn, the company Elbit Systems took up the development of an air-based anti-missile defense system.

At the beginning of the year, Rafael introduced the “Magen Or” system. In the literal translation, its name means “Shield of Light”. Laser power exceeds 100 kW. It can hit targets at a distance of up to 10 km.

The IDF plans to use high-power laser systems to strengthen its segmented air defense. Includes Hetz, David’s Sling and Iron Dome anti-missile systems. The first Magen Or system will be deployed near the Gaza border within a year. Source
