Employees of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute named after Ihor Sikorsky created a unique technology, through which bulletproof fireproof glass is produced, called “Transparent armor” by the authors of the development. Bulletproof glass withstands shots from a Kalashnikov assault rifle fired from a distance of 10 meters.
The technology is already completely ready. A special furnace was built for the production of transparent armor and was commissioned. At the moment, we are also finalizing work on the technology that will allow us to equip our glass with a heating system – this is necessary to prevent fogging and freezing of the glass,” said scientist Viktor Taranov.
The developers of the technology want the use of transparent armor to protect Ukrainian soldiers and officers at the front. Experienced samples have already been delivered for tests on equipment used for the defense of Ukraine. Bulletproof glass was transferred to equip military helicopters and boats. It can be installed on other equipment, for example, on vehicles of the Armed Forces.
The developers say that all high-tech products for defense needs are expensive. To understand the scale of prices, glass “Transparent armor” with an area of a quarter square meter (670 x 360 millimeters) costs 9 thousand dollars (this is without heating). Heated – 13 thousand dollars. The final cost is affected by a number of factors – the quantity required, the configuration of the glass, etc.
In manufacturing technology, there are many technical nuances that are probably not very interesting and understandable to the general public. Simply put, 2 or more empty glasses are taken and glued together using a unique oven-polymerization technology created by the team. Source
