Google Chrome for Mac has been updated today with new Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes designed to give users more control over memory usage and battery life. Memory saver mode frees memory from tabs that are not being actively used, allowing smoother operation with tabs in use. Google says this mode is especially useful when performing other system-intensive tasks like video editing or gaming. Inactive tabs are reloaded as needed.
In power saving mode, Chrome will automatically limit battery consumption when the charge level reaches 20 percent. For websites with animations and videos, background activity will be limited, as will visual effects.
Power Saver and Memory Saver can be turned on or off using the three-dot menu in Chrome, and important websites can be marked as excluded from Memory Saver. The new modes are included in the latest version of Chrome for Mac (version 108) and will be available to all users worldwide in the coming weeks.
