Google Chrome has announced that it has added support for passkeys, a new industry standard that hopes to replace passwords by making logging into websites and apps easier and more secure. With passkeys, users can authenticate using their iPhone or Android device and log into websites, eliminating the need for passwords.

In newer versions of iOS and Android, users visiting websites that support access keys can use biometric authentication on a trusted device to verify their identity. In a blog post, Google said it’s adding passkey support to Chrome that allows users to scan a QR code on their Android or “iPhone” device to sign in. Access key support is also coming to Chrome on Android.

On a desktop device, you can also choose to use a passkey from a nearby mobile device, and you can use an Android or iOS device, as passkeys are created according to industry standards. During such a login, the access key will not leave your mobile device. Only securely generated code is exchanged with the site, so there is nothing to leak, unlike a password.

A number of other companies and applications have introduced or announced future support for access keys, including 1Password, PayPal, Microsoft, eBay, and more. Access keys support in Google Chrome is now available with the latest update. To learn more about access keys, see our explainer.
