NGC 6530 is stated to be a cluster of several thousand stars located approximately 4,350 light-years from Earth.
The cluster itself is located within the larger Lagoon Nebula, a giant interstellar cloud of gas and dust. It is the nebula that gives this image its distinctively smoky appearance, as if clouds of interstellar gas and dust stretch across this image.
Astronomers studied NGC 6530 using the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2.
They also explored the region in hopes of finding new lineages that would indicate the beginning of the star formation process.
The vast majority of spawners were found in only one region, the nearby Orion Nebula.
This makes their origins and lifespans in other astronomical settings difficult to understand.
