As media literacy increases, the quality of content will increase.

The new media that emerged in the field of communication with the transformation in technology allows anyone to produce. Experts point out that people consume not only thanks to social media, but point to the importance of media literacy. associate Dr Esennur Sirer: “As the level of literacy increases, so will the quality of content in this area.” said.

Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication Head of Radio Television Cinema Department Assoc. Dr Esennur Sirer has made an evaluation of the concept of new media.

Sirer stated that until the 2000s, all kinds of visual content could only be viewed on the television screen, saying:

New ‘Producer-Consumer’ concept

“With the technological transformation, including the media, we had the opportunity to access different content from different screens whenever we wanted. Our naming of this brand new media order, which is suddenly changing, also showed promise for the new and dynamic flow of our lives: New Media was now our new focus, including everyone. While discussions about whether the new media are an alternative to the traditional continued, a brand new concept took center stage: producer-consumer. In other words, the audience that yesterday roamed from channel to channel in front of television, left its place to the audience that produced the content. All individuals, aged 7 to 77, could find a medium to produce and share their own content.”

What should the public watch, who should follow?

Claiming that so much content puts another burden on the public, Assoc. Dr Esennur Sirer, “What should the public watch or who should they follow? This situation immediately put the concept of media literacy back on the agenda. This situation, which has also evolved with age into new media literacy, basically means that individuals are making choices to increase their knowledge and manners under the bombardment of content. This highly conceptualized concept should not be used to imply viewing or producing entertaining content. Since people naturally need entertainment, means of communication have emerged as they present the content in an entertaining way. The problem here is that all kinds of content, including malicious ones, are packaged with entertainment.” said.

Audience awareness and media literacy have become more important

Claiming that all types of written, visual and audio content are formed according to our previous knowledge and experience, Assoc. Dr Esennur Sirer stated that the importance of media literacy became more prominent during this period, saying: “Our literacy in new media is also based on our previous experience of reading and writing mass media. Media literacy is a field that we use in everyday life. and it’s an ongoing process, it’s very important to make this process an area of social consensus and find a solution, because as the level of literacy increases, so does the quality of the content created in this area. ” said.

Raising the awareness of producers creates a consciousness difference

associate Dr Esennur Sirer said: “The flow will lose one-sidedness and become rich. Our expectation of media literacy as a society is already moving in that direction. Technical developments and trends in digital publishing, which seem secondary to this situation but need to be interpreted holistically , increase the dynamism of the subject. The point to remember is; In making all these legal regulations, it is necessary to make forward-looking regulations by considering the continuous movement of technology. In a world we live in today , surrounded by cable networks and without control hygiene, it is important to be able to dream of a wireless virtual world.” said.

Why is legislation necessary?

Noting that there is of course so much content, it is necessary to regulate and establish a legal basis, Assoc. Dr Esennur Sirer said: “The primary aim is to protect children and young people from adverse effects. Until now, the protective barriers in traditional means of communication have been insufficient in the new media age. Content that now appears on four screens required a more interactive approach. This situation should be resolved between the parties of the event in the context of media literacy. It is necessary, within the academic foresight of legislators, to reach consensus on a platform of sociologists, public representatives and broadcasters. Ultimately, it is in the interest of individuals to have all stakeholders at the table.” said.

Joint Consensus Will Bring Its Own Control…

associate Dr Esennur Sirer concluded her words as follows: “The media will take control of itself when the parties to the issue fulfill their duties in the work carried out by common consensus. In this case, we don’t need to criticize the script of a series. Because productions made without causing discrimination and marginalization in society will find a place without competition, in an ethical framework, by observing basic human values.”
