The Chinese government has banned the supply to Russia of Loongson processors based on its own LoongArch architecture, which could replace Intel if parallel import channels are blocked.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Kommersant.

The decision relates to the fact that the technology is considered strategically important and used in China’s military-industrial complex.

A broadcast source close to the Ministry of Digital Affairs of the Russian Federation said that the Chinese government has banned the supply of Loongson processors based on its LoongArch architecture to Russia and other countries. According to him, some Russian electronics manufacturers have already tested these chips, but it is now impossible to buy a batch.

Loongson Corporation was founded in 2002 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences to create an alternative to the American Intel and AMD processors. In the spring of 2021, the company presented its own architecture Loongson Instruction Set Architecture (LoongArch), it is compatible with programs written under Intel (X86) and AMD (ARM) architecture.

After the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, leading processor manufacturers suspended their supplies to Russia. After that, parallel importation was legalized in Russia: criminal and administrative liability for importing products without the consent of the right holder was removed.
