Twitter’s new president answered the question User about the character limitation in a post on a completely different topic – the movie “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”.

More characters in tweets

User Allan Obar asked if it was true that Twitter was aiming to increase the character count from 280 to 4,000, to which Musk replied with a short “Yes”.

It is currently unclear how exactly this update will work. Twitter had previously announced plans to publish long-form articles and even started testing them before the acquisition was complete. When a certain character limit is reached, it is possible for the tweet compose window to automatically convert it to an article. Or, as with other social networks at the moment, the written texts will simply collapse.

It’s also unclear whether this will lead to the end of the thread (or branches) feature, where tweets are posted one after another in a long chain.

The exact launch date of the function has not been disclosed.

We will remind you that the tweet limit was last increased from 140 characters to 280 characters in November 2017.

Shadow Ban

Musk also said that the company will begin notifying users that access to their tweets has been restricted, offering an opportunity to appeal if they find themselves under a so-called “shadow ban.” This includes the fact that the account retains all its functionality, but in the feeds of its messages, recommendations, searches, etc. called hidden limitation of a user page, where it is hidden from other users.

“Twitter is working on a software update that will show your real account status so you’ll know clearly if you’ve been banned, why and how to appeal.”

Such bans may be issued as a result of complaints, violations of social networking rules, posting prohibited content or other actions that may impose restrictions to prevent them in the future. Often times, a person experiencing shadow blocking does not know about it. The new functionality will even give you the opportunity to learn about it and remove restrictions.
